Welcome! There is a missionary opportunity for you!

As followers of Christ, we are called to know and support the life and mission of other Christians around the world. Lutheran congregations in the Central Pennsylvania area have had a long-standing relationship with the people of Tanzania. Our mutual companionship has included praying for each other, studying together, sharing correspondence, and exchanging ideas and resources.

Our companion congregation in Tanzania is located in Ipinda, in the southern highlands close to Lake Nyasa. In 2010 three emissaries from Advent made the trip to Ipinda on a fact-finding mission and to establish a better means of communication between the two congregations. Through this effort we have gained a more vivid awareness of the cultural, social, economic, medical, and educational challenges facing our brothers and sisters in Ipinda.

In addition, we have grown in appreciation of the spiritual values which bind us together. Through our improved communication via internet connection, we look forward to continuing to celebrate each otherís successes, support one anotherís challenges, and help one another to grow in Godís love. It is hoped that a contingent from Advent will be able to visit the Ipinda congregation on a regular basis.

Please see the kiosk in Fellowship Hall to become better acquainted with our mutual relationship through colorful photographs of life in Tanzania, recent correspondence, and the latest updates.  For more information please check our regional churchís (Synodís) website at www.lss-elca.org.

The Lutheran Volunteer Corp invites self-motivated adults aged 21 and older to live simply in an intentional, inclusive, sustainable Christian community while working full-time in a nonprofit organization that promotes social justice. Examples of this service ministry would include offering case management in a homeless shelter, teaching at an alternative high school, assisting with refugee resettlement, or providing legal assistance to laborers and undocumented immigrants. It could also include running a youth ministry program, staffing a food bank, or advocating for marginalized people.

Placement would be in one of 12 cities in the United States and term of service is one year beginning with a week long orientation in mid-August. All volunteers receive stipends for living expenses and for transportation as well as health insurance benefits. Most positions qualify for student loan deferment and an AmeriCorps Education grant.

More information and applications are available at LutheranVolunteerCorp.org or by writing to the Corp at 1226 Vermont Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20005 or by calling (202) 387-3222.
